As the founding managing partner of Golden Gate Ventures—a seed to series A venture firm—Paine is a venture capitalist by day, backing bold founders across Southeast Asia. By night, he is a proficient data scientist with a talent for coding and leveraging AI to enhance his work. This expertise results from his exceptional academic qualifications, including a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management, Information and Operations Management at USC Marshall School of Business.
He completed the regional entrepreneurship acceleration program at MIT Sloan School of Management in 2016, which helped him gain valuable insights into how to drive economic growth and foster innovation-driven entrepreneurship (IDE). During this period, he also served as the managing director of The Founder Institute in Singapore from 2010 to 2018.
At the firm, Paine managed the Singapore program and played a key role in expanding it to other regions, including Southeast Asia, China, and Australia. He derived great satisfaction from supporting startups and introducing elements of the Silicon Valley ethos to entrepreneurs in cities worldwide. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Founder Institute Director Award for Greatest Ecosystem Impact (Singapore) in 2012.
Following his tenure at The Founder Institute, Paine has continued to play a pivotal role in the entrepreneurial ecosystem through various leadership positions. In 2018, he joined LuneX Ventures in Singapore as a member of the Investment Committee, contributing to the firm's focus on investing in high-potential, early-stage ventures.
He then assumed the Edmund Hillary Global Impact Fellow position at the Edmund Hillary Fellowship in 2020. As a fellow, he is part of a distinguished group of entrepreneurs and investors dedicated to developing scalable ventures with a global impact from Aotearoa, New Zealand. Paine continues to serve in both influential roles, shaping the future of innovation and entrepreneurship.
His longest-serving role, however, is with the company he cofounded in 2012, Golden Gate Ventures. In collaboration with the National Research Foundation in Singapore, Paine and his team initiated investments into the local startup ecosystem that year and have continued to do so ever since. Several clients allude to the significant impact Paine has had on their growth.
