Over the years, individuals have expressed their identity through various facets such as culture, fashion, language, sexual orientation, and dialect. Traditionally, this expression has been influenced by governmental constructs, wielding a measure of control. However, the landscape shifted with the ascent of tech behemoths like Google and Facebook, placing the control and governance of one's identity in the hands of these corporate giants. This shift empowers them to grant or revoke access to specific accounts, rendering individuals susceptible. Entire life narratives can be intricately woven on these platforms, only to be summarily and capriciously dismantled. This extends to financial institutions and banks, where individuals often must seek permission to access their own funds, a right fundamental to human autonomy.

In response, a current paradigm shift centers on the idea of self-sovereign ownership of identity. Enter PhotoChromic, an entity striving to empower individuals by restoring true ownership over their identities. This interoperable, modular, and decentralized service provider gives individuals the authority to claim ownership and manage their personal data, enabling them to assert their rights and safeguard their privacy effectively.

“In today's rapidly evolving world, we are witnessing an innovation wave that puts individuals at the center. It is crucial that we start embracing this new paradigm and recognize the need for individuals to have ownership and control over this transformative construct,” says Murray Legg, founder of PhotoChromic.

PhotoChromic leverages blockchain, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), smart contracts, and biometrics to provide unprecedented verification, authentication, and portability, surpassing what is possible in the real world. After completing the KYC AML check, individuals can proceed to mint an identity NFT that is directly linked to their wallet. This distinctive NFT guarantees ownership and instills trust and credibility in the blockchain-powered marketplace, eliminating the need for dependence on large technology companies or governments. This provides individuals with the freedom to exercise autonomy and engage in relationships, transactions, and financial transfers at their discretion.

One of the key features PhotoChromic offers is utilising an open protocol and an open wallet system. This implies that once individuals create an identity NFT, it becomes a permanent part of their wallet. Its strategy revolves around working with an infrastructure that supports an open wallet system, allowing users to utilize any Web3 wallets available now or in the future. In addition, this system is inherently integrated into the Ethereum chain. As it is built specifically for Ethereum, it seamlessly integrates with the various features of smart contracts and their operational abilities. It utilizes ENS, also known as the Ethereum Name Service, enabling individuals to obtain a distinct and individualized identifier for their identity.

Users can create a representative avatar called a profile picture or PFP, symbolizing their identity. This avatar is accompanied by a human-readable address and connects to various other identifiers like Gmail, Discord, and X accounts. This established identity allows others to search for people and trust their online presence.

With the advent of the content and creator economy, individuals can now claim exclusive rights to their creations. This is especially important in today’s era of artificial intelligence and generative image AI, as the proliferation of false information available to the public is vast. So having a platform that allows for verification of a creator's work ensures that authenticity prevails, and false information is minimized in public discourse.

Amidst this ever-growing influx of videos, photos, and content, distinguishing between what is true and what is fake becomes a formidable challenge. Yet, PhotoChromic possesses the opportunity to create an unhindered verification channel that confirms the identity of individuals in the content and validates its authenticity. This way it can ascertain the legitimacy of the media it encounters and trust only information from reliable sources. This distinguishes PhotoChromic’s approach and is integral to its values.

PhotoChromic seeks partnerships with prominent banks and financial institutions historically responsible for managing identity. Their collaboration enables individuals in safely transitioning into Web3 with freedom and independence from a reliance on typical financial technology companies. It is also important to implement multifactor authentication to ensure a higher level of security. This means that when conducting transactions or verifying credibility, there should be multiple methods of confirmation available, like using a passcode on the device or the browser used for the transaction.

“Europe is leading the way in regulating Web3, with market standards that prioritize both regulation and individual autonomy. It will require courage from corporations to embrace and explore this new technology, and by driving innovation, we are eager to collaborate with industry trailblazers to propel this movement forward,” concludes Legg.
