FREMONT, CA: With the New Year comes new changes where we will see many developments in the smart city space. Here are a few trends that will likely influence the smart city space this year

San Jose, CA, became the largest city in the country this year to ban natural gas infrastructure from many new residential buildings as a part of its initiative to decrease city emissions. More cities will also consider turning to electrification in the coming year as they understand the long-term cost benefits.
Consideration of Mobility Hubs and Car-free Zones
Cities are ready to plan for more mobility hubs in 2020 as a way to reduce emissions and to encourage residents to get out of their cars and onto bikes, buses, ad scooters. Last year, car-free zones were implemented in some of the cities' busiest areas, promoting biking and public transport initiatives.
Demand for Stronger Data Privacy
Concerns and the need for data privacy will grow as smart cities use and target data to operate. The Connective, a new smart region consortium in the Greater Phoenix area, is building its smart region with data privacy as the top priority. The prevailing concern of feedback the group received was about the importance of data and a need to ensure the protection of information provided to cities.
Less Scooter Operators and Consolidations
Washington, DC, is one of the first cities to embrace dockless bikes and scooters majorly. But 2020 will see a decrease in scooter operators on city streets, experiencing more consolidation. Despite that, the reduction of scooter operators does not mean fewer scooters. Also, the merger and acquisition trend will continue to grow, and the recent activity within the micromobility industry points to a maturing market in the coming year.
Wakeup Call for Greener investments
Due to extreme heat and other weather conditions, the need for green investment is increasing. These investments would help cities in the coming years, as the cost of clean energy projects is high.
Crack Down on Cyberattacks
Cities have become targets for cyberattacks because of their lack of robust cybersecurity networks, with most states allocating fewer than 3 percent of their IT budget to cyberthreat preparation. This will lead cities to address the issues and come up with solutions to protect their systems.
Flying Car Investments
Investments in electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL), or "flying cars" will be significant in 2020. In 2019, there was an investment of $68.4 million in venture capital on electric air taxi startups. Uber is committed to start testing its Uber Air Flying taxi service in 2020 and is expecting eVTOLs to the mainstream as soon as in 2023.
