India's digital unicorns are growing, while China's startups have experienced a little decline.
FREMONT, CA: Asia's startup ecosystem encourages optimism across the continent that startups may survive despite challenging market conditions. Growth is happening quickly, especially in India, where 16 startups will have valuations of USD one billion or more in 2022 alone.
According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies, or Nasscom, the unprecedented growth across every sector of technology is witnessing a significant rise in multinational companies entering India to set up innovation hubs.

In the post-pandemic environment, this trend has been intensifying. Forty-two companies had valuations of USD one billion or more in 2021, and the unicorns of 2022 are expected to grow at a similar rate. Asian countries like China and India are essential hotspots for unicorns, and much of Southeast Asia and Oceania have also registered several billion-dollar firms.
Although the United States has the greatest number of unicorns worldwide, China and India are best positioned to challenge this hegemony. Given the challenging market conditions that exist in the country, it is especially impressive that unicorns continue to appear there. The conflict in Ukraine and the U.S. Federal Reserve's stricter fiscal policies have had a particularly negative effect on India's economy.
Due to this, the IPO market in India has slowed down; according to statistics from EY, just 16 initial public offerings were issued in the first quarter of 2022. The 23 listings that occurred during the same time in 2021 pale in comparison to this. The cities of India, which are booming with cutting-edge businesses, cannot be surprised by the rise of unicorns in 2022. According to Startup world's startup environment, Indian cities are overtaking IT hotspots in Asia and the West.
Delhi went up 11 spots in the rankings to land in position 26, while Bengaluru also advanced one spot to 22nd. Despite India's gains, Beijing, the highest-ranked entry from Asia, dropped from fourth to fifth, with Silicon Valley, New York, London, and Boston taking the top four slots, respectively.
Given the ongoing increase in unicorn production in India, it is important to follow Bengaluru's developments. With over USD 7.5 billion in VC investments raised this year–a significant increase from the USD 5.2 billion registered over the first six months of 2021–the city is rated sixth in the world for venture tech capital investment during the first five months of the year. The fact that India's unicorn fever occurred when the tech landscape is constantly changing to make it more accessible for both businesses and individual consumers are what makes it so beautiful.
