FREMONT, CA: More than 2 million solar installations are there in the U.S. Solar energy reduces carbon emissions and promotes energy independence. The parts of the solar panels contribute primarily to the looming waste management issue once they are decommissioned. Garvin Heath, a senior scientist in the Strategic Energy Analysis Center of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) points out that the solar panel parts would make up more than 10 percent of the electronic waste generated worldwide by 2050 if its usage is continued at the same pace.

A report by the International Renewable Agency (IRENA) estimates that by 2050, more than $15 billion could be recovered from following the standard recycling procedures for solar panels. The repair and reuse of solar panels should be encouraged to be resold for nominal prices in economically backward markets, solving the affordability issues.
When Should Solar Panels be Recycled?
Solar Panels are designed to have a lifespan of 30 years. From a residential point of view, the homeowners and solar contractors determine when to decommission a solar unit depending on the performance of the solar panels. Some decommission the panels prematurely, whereas some extend its life by retrofitting. Still, the decision needs to be made based on power being produced by the solar panel according to the inverter reading.
The majority of the solar panels have a window that displays the watts or kilowatts of power it consumes. Various other inverters' models have light to display the efficiency of the system. Ideally, the green light on the system indicates a fine working condition, whereas a red blinking light shows a pertaining issue. Even though there is an issue with the system, power is generated in some cases unless the snag isn't that fatal to the system.
The solar panels produce maximum power during daylight, and midday is the best time to run a system check for recognizing the performance of the system. Utility bills are also a good reference point but are not proven to be accurate. It can suggest the amount of surplus power fed into the grid rather than detecting how much is generated.
