Italy's recent research on a large number of real mobility data indicates a misapprehension of these problems, and electric vehicles (EVs) could replace a large percentage of existing cars without any restriction on the driver. This study also challenges whether major investments in fast-changing public networks are the right way to electrify vehicles.

Analysis and Results
The first section of the study focuses on the person who needs the original set and assumes that there will be no behavioral improvement from the patient. The result of the study by Professors Sergio M. Savaresi and Silvia Strada of Politecnico di Milano is surprising given the 300km range of the electric car. That means that about 50 percent of the cars will never have driven more than 300 kilometers in a single day for a whole year. Many manufacturers target this range for new EVs. Moreover, by eliminating an over-range of up to five days a year, the percentage would grow to a whopping 92 percent from 50 percent.

The study also indicates that the distribution of the annual mileage of cars belongs to two classes. Needless to say, 'never over-range' cars have a lower average annual mileage of almost 15,000 km/year. This annual distribution of the mileage is of fundamental importance for the detailed estimation of the economic viability of this parameter.
The second section discusses the critical component of the economic 'break-up' of an electric car instead of the equivalent petrol car. It considers a range of mid-size car models, which are the most desirable for electrification, where gasoline and a full-electric version are available. Looking at the existing markets, the price of the petrol car in this class is about EUR 15.000-18.000, while the comparable electric car has an extra cost of EUR 12.000-15.000. In view of depreciation, property taxes, electrical energy costs, insurance and maintenance costs, a full cost model has been built for this reason. Two criteria have been analyzed; the first is without any government benefits, and the second is currently available. Present incentives in Italy are relatively limited and correspond to the projected cost reduction of electric cars in almost three years from now due to large-scale production and a reduction in the cost of batteries.
