Southeast Asia's startup ecosystem has been steadily expanding, acting as a critical catalyst for the region’s economic development.
FREMONT, CA: Following the recent trends, it is expected that at least ten new unicorns will emerge in southeast Asia by 2024. The region is witnessing a new phase of investment, with a projected value of a total of USD 70 billion over the next five years. In the past decade, ten unicorns have emerged in the region whose current market value crosses the USD 34 billion mark. This includes companies like Grab, Traveloka, and Go-Jek. Southeast Asia is currently ranked at third position in the APAC region, headed by China and India. Several companies headquartered in Malaysia and Singapore have been receiving massive fundings since 2014. In 2017, southeast Asia recorded 524 venture capital deals, four times more than that of 2012. The majority of the new capital went to technological companies. Several investors cited that technology was their main target, primarily fintech companies. This is when the region produced the first few unicorns
Southeast Asia also witnessed an increase in private equity investment of USD 6 to 9 billion. Considering that the governments in the region are readily supporting the startup ecosystem, the massive attraction of investment from foreign entities is not surprising. The region also attracts new investors based on its microeconomics fundamentals, providing them the chance to invest in emerging businesses and secondary markets of various sizes. While Singapore emerges as southeast Asia's most prominent investment hub, several other startup ecosystems are also emerging across the region. Indonesia and Vietnam now are the hottest new location preferred by investors outside the Singapore market. Over the last five years, Vietnam and Indonesia together generated 20% of Southeast Asia’s private equity deals. And with the continuous support from local governments, Southeast Asia's startup ecosystem will continue to expand and foster innovation across various industries.
