Fremont, CA: Malaysia is once again identified as the country that has given tech investors the best return on investment in a new study on Southeast Asia Tech Investment that we cooperated on with Cento Ventures.
Of course, part of the reason is that the tech environment there was established early on, whereas most investments in Indonesia and Vietnam are still new. Malaysia, on the other hand, has several advantages that are worth investigating further.

Another interesting fact is that Malaysia, even more than Singapore, has the greatest percentage of households having digital gadgets. While this is a good sign of a country's tech penetration, it also indicates a nation that spends a large portion of its disposable income on devices, which can be a good or bad thing (the newest iPhone costs around 2 months of an average Malaysian monthly salary). Access to these technology and skills and education should, over time, result in an increase in disposable income per household.
Because of these variables, Malaysia serves as a link between Singapore (which is far ahead of the rest of Southeast Asia in terms of development; not food), and the rest of Southeast Asia, making it an excellent place to test regional business concepts.
Malaysia has also enhanced its regulatory component relating to property rights in the unpredictable geopolitical scenario of 2020, producing clear norms and laws that give protection to owners.
This means that investors should have clearer incentives to participate in economic activity in the country and should be less concerned about potential expropriations caused by a lack of clear laws.
Malaysia's trade borders have been essential in generating new channels of information and monetary movement across the countries, as Singapore's bridge to the rest of Southeast Asia. To put it another way, it has enabled various industries to integrate and adapt to the new wave of enterprises and opportunities that lie ahead.
