FREMONT, CA: The venture capital firm Madrona Venture Group’s Seattle-based “startup studio” has landed $11.3 million in the third round of its funding to assist the launch of a dozen new apps. The Madrona Venture Labs (MVL) plans to utilize the funds for the conception of 8 to 12 companies that will explore the role of AI in real estate, retail, automation, and insurance over the new few years.
The funding received in this third round has been the most significant amount since the company’s inception in 2014, bringing the studio’s total finance to $20 million. The difference in the latest round is that the funds are brought in by external venture capitals like Alpha Edison and WestRiver Group, unlike the first two rounds, where Madrona Venture Group itself has funded. Many angel investors have also provided funds for the launched of new startups.

The MVL has launched seven companies—including Spruce Up, an interior design startup, and Mighty AI, a platform for training computer vision models—which are collectively worth $140 million.
The idea that fuels MVL is to build a systematic process by bringing in experienced founders to handle the lab, and carry on the tradition of assimilating founders from various areas of expertise into Seattle-based Startups. The founders from all over the world are amalgamated with people working to solve high-priority problems. As soon as a good idea is identified, it is put through extensive testing, and if it succeeds, it is eventually spun out as companies. The venture capitals like Madrona Venture Groups have helped to vet ideas and are tested for the market.
The studio fills in the gap caused by initial hurdles the company might face in early-stage of conception such as recruiting, and financing, which can inhibit the startup’s progress.
