As Green roofs gain popularity, the government is starting to systematize the field with policies, guidelines, and incentives.
FREMONT, CA: Green roofs are much sustainable than standard practices that are penned as "green". These roofs act as a mini-ecosystem, which contributes to both the surrounding atmosphere and internal ambience of the building. Green roofs have been around since at least middle ages, but, in different forms at different economic levels, for instance, sod roofs are ideal green roofs.
The modern green roof is a little bit more complicated than just plants. It involves aspects related to water-proofing and protection against root damage, a water drainage system, filters, and a growing medium that is light in weight. The plants used for green roofs are usually shrubs that are small, drought-tolerant such as sedums, or even large-sized grass. The system can be availed in a modular form or custom-built depending on the area, planting medium, depth available, and can also be made to resemble a natural meadow or a garden.

Residential and Commercial
Private residences have been using green roofs successfully, even if the capital cost is high. The design and installation is a meticulous process that has pulled back the time efficiency from the picture. Also, if the green roofing takes up time and cost initially when compared to standard roofing, they provide lifetime savings as time goes by.
Single-family homes make up almost two percent of the total green roof areas in the U.S., whereas multifamily homes have the upper hand as the square footage to construct a green roof is available in bigger houses. These multifamily homes make up 22 percent of the green roof projects, leaving the majority of green roof areas to industrial and commercial buildings.
Major cities have added financial incentive programs to reduce the use of air conditioning by up to 75 percent. Several other environmental concerns such as air pollution, greenhouse gas production, storm water runoff reduction, and provision of amenities for increased human health and recreation are given incentives as well to establish a better foundation for environmental protection. These incentives range from low-cost financing to defray the upfront cost premium of green roof build; governments also have tax credits and other rebates as well.
