The tip of human fingers is lined with a dense array of receptors, making it highly sensitive to feel even minute features as small as nanometers. Kimo Johnson recognized this idea when he was visiting aerospace companies that manufacture metal parts. He understood that the majority were depending on veteran employees to conduct the “fingernail test” to judge and identify whether a surface defect existed, and if it was just a small scratch or dent deep enough to compromise the quality of the part.

Led by Kimo Johnson, CEO, GelSight now provides handheld instruments that accurately visualize and analyze the 3D topography of any surface within seconds, unraveling microscopic structures. Its proprietary elastomeric sensors focus on the surface topography of any material, such as metals, composites, and glass, to display the features of the surface in any variety of ambient lighting conditions or material reflectivity. The GelSight Mobile system also gives instant visual feedback affixed with position, depth, and other surface characteristics with high spatial resolution down to the micron level.
The company has begun to attract traction as numerous large aerospace companies are in favor of deploying the tool. In this list of companies that are clients to Gelsight is the airplane engine giant Rolls-Royce.
In its latest Series B funding round, Gelsight has raised $10 million, bringing its total funding to $11.8 million. The company is expecting revenue to cross more $4 million this year on sales of more than 100 systems and 2,500 gel cartridges. The Anzu Partners led funding round was a success, and GelSight intends to utilize the funds to kick start the growth and development plans.
As a part of the deal in Series B funding round, GelSight welcomed aviation executive David Hurley, US Air Force Lieutenant General Judith Fedder (Ret.), and US Navy Vice Admiral David Buss (Ret.) to its Board of Directors. The co-founder of Equity Management Partners, Advisor Pierre Villeneuve, Ph.D., has also joined the company’s Board.
