Fremont, CA: In a broad sense, electric cars that run on the chemical reaction of hydrogen and water are called the hydrogen-powered cars. The hydrogen gas passes through the fuel cell with a positively charged anode, and a negatively charged cathode wherein both are in contact with an electrolyte. Hydrogen combines with oxygen in the fuel cell stack, where the platinum catalyst helps chemical reaction to produce electrical charge to power the car's motor.
The emission from the tailpipe is eco-friendly and releases no carbon dioxide or nitrogen oxides. It has low lifecycle emissions, and since hydrogen isn't available in a free form, it must be extracted, mostly from natural gas.

When hydrogen is extracted, it is first compressed, ready for injection into a fuel tank at the refilling station. The car stores the hydrogen in a high-pressure cylinder, abiding all the rules to prevent any discrepancies.
Battery-powered cars are much suitable to stop environmental pollution when compared to the currently used engines, and the consumers are more likely to prefer those instead of the Hydrogen-powered versions. The hope is to complement the electric cars with hydrogen-powered cars and not to replace it fully. There are many reasons for the lack of commercial updates, the main reason being the technology, which is still in the nascent stage of development.
There are as few as three types of hydrogen-powered cars available, one designed by Toyota, another by Honda, and the last one is Hyundai. As the technology is still in developmental stages, there is a small number of cars manufactured, which are expensive to buy, the expenses mostly boil down to the rarity of the metals used in the chemical catalysis.
Hydrogen cars are a smarter option in terms of the environment as illustrated, and the cheaper road tax is an added benefit since the cars produce ultra-low emission vehicles. Even so, it is financially achievable for businesses for those who can take advantage of tax incentives on offer and could provide the necessary refueling infrastructure.
As technological innovation develops, costs will reduce as the cars become cheaper to manufacture and run. The fact that hydrogen can be generated using renewable energy makes the manufacturing process clean and non-polluting. While battery-electric vehicles may prove to be a solution for now, it is a short-term solution to green transportation needs, hydrogen-powered cars can be a much permanent future-proofed vehicle.
