FREMONT, CA: The 800G transport wars stepped up a notch following the announcement from Ciena, Juniper Networks, and Verizon last week. The three companies announced that they pushed 800 gigabytes per second of data across a single fiber wavelength. In contrast, Infinera and Corning announced that they had delivered 800G on a single wavelength as well. The trial, using 800 kilometers of Corning's fiber, demonstrated the benefits of an 800G solution. This solution will help to meet the growing bandwidth demands by service providers for the metro to subsea network applications and services.
“This demonstration proves that 800G transmission using Infinera’s industry-leading technology enables a wide variety of network applications and is further enhanced by Corning’s innovative TXF fiber,” said Infinera CTO Parthi Kandappan, in a statement. “This achievement is made possible by Infinera’s high degree of vertical integration, including our in-house digital signal processor design, photonic integrated circuit design and manufacturing, and holistic in-house packaging."

The 800G trial was based on Infinera's Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE6) technology across Corning's TXF fiber. Corning's TXF fiber is an ultra-low-loss, silica-core fiber that's ITU-T G.654.E compliant. The trial involved the use the ICE6 technology in Infinera's Groove (GX) Series platform transmitting 800G using 64QAM with probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS.)
After the demonstration, Infinera highlighted the advanced features of its vertically integrated ICE6 technology, including Nyquist subcarriers, per-subcarrier long-codeword PCS, and per-subcarrier dynamic bandwidth allocation. Last week, Ciena and Comcast teamed to conduct a long-distance 600 Gbps single wavelength pilot deployment across 1,600 kilometers.
Recently, Infinera also announced the pricing of USD 200 million aggregate principal amount of senior convertible notes, due in 2027, in a private placement to qualified institutional buyers. The Notes will be general, unsecured obligations of Infinera and interest will be payable semiannually in arrears at a rate of 2.50 percent per year on March 1 and September 1 of each year, beginning on September 1, 2020. The Notes will mature on March 1, 2027, unless repurchased, redeemed or converted before such date.
