Coca-cola introduces the biodegradable KeelClip to be launched in the next year to control the pollution caused by the plastic wrap packaging
FREMONT, CA: To reduce the usage of plastic wrap on multipacks, Coca-cola introduces KeelClip across Europe. It is a minimalist in design paperboard packaging. The multinational beverage company, along with its European bottling partners Coca-Cola HBC and Coca-Cola European Partners will commence the use of the new technology from the beginning of next year. The transition from plastic wrap to paperboard will be implemented entirely in the Coca-Cola HBC markets by the end of 2021. The Coca-Cola European Partners has plans to commence rollout in the Netherlands from next year.
The paperboard technology adoption is already announced to be fulfilled in March 2020 by AB Inbev’s UK division. it has the technology rolling out for all its products, including Budweiser, Stella Artois, and Bud Light. This makes Coca-Cola the first non-alcoholic RTF industry product to use the KeelClip.

The biodegradable and recyclable paperboard KeelClip is structured with a top board that cans clip onto, and a central cardboard ‘keel,’ very similar to a ship’s keel, will stabilize the pack. Coca-cola claims to have worked with graphic packaging international to optimize the design of the products to fit the packaging. “This new type of packaging not only replaces the plastic wrap but also minimizes the amount of paper and card required,” says Coca-Cola.
The new paperboard technology is designed for use in multipacks up to eight cans larger than which are packed in carton boxes. KeelClip in the Netherlands will rollout with Coca-Cola European Partners, continuing in release with more markets to follow.
Steve Gould, Graphic Packaging International’s new product development and marketing director, beverage division, Europe, said: “The KeelClip technology is effective for can multipacks of various diameters and heights. This means that we can provide a safe, effective package with no need for secondary plastic. When businesses such as Coca-Cola HBC, and Coca-Cola European Partners invest in these technologies, we can make a difference to the way we package goods and drive the industry to continue to change, too.”
