These concepts were on display at the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO)-sponsored J-Startup Pavilion, which featured 52 developing Japanese startups among the numerous Japanese exhibitors at CES.
JETRO chose the startups not only for their cutting-edge technology but also for their commitment to addressing social concerns throughout the world, to speed up their international expansion, Diabetes being one of them. According to the World Health Organization, this condition affects over 420 million people worldwide and caused 1.5 million deaths in 2019, making it the tenth greatest cause of death. For diabetics, monitoring blood glucose levels is critical, and many must sample their blood by finger pricks, a painful procedure that must be repeated several times a day.
Light Touch Technology Inc. was created in Osaka in 2017 to promote health and social prosperity through innovative optical technology. It has created a noninvasive blood glucose sensor prototype that allows individuals with diabetes to check their blood glucose levels without having to prick themselves. It is the world's first noninvasive blood glucose sensor to meet the International Organization for Standardization's criteria, and it will be on display at the J-Startup Pavilion at CES 2022.
The sensor measures blood glucose using an infrared laser. Laser beams are directed onto the fingertip while users touch a sensor attached to a portable device for five seconds at a time. The results are sent to cellphones or dedicated displays in seconds. The prototype, in addition to being painless, eliminates the risk of infection from a discarded lancet and produces no medical waste. It would benefit diabetics, people at risk of acquiring diabetes, and those who seek thorough health information if it were approved.
