Attentive plans to use the newly raised capital to expand its footprint nationwide. The company grew its engineering organization 160 percent since the closure of its Series B roughly six months ago.
FREMONT, CA: Attentive, a mobile messaging platform for e-commerce and retail brands, raised $70 million in Series C round of financing led by Sequoia and IVP. This comes after the firm announced $40 million in its Series B funding in less than six months. Attentive has now raised a total of $124 million.
Attentive, founded by Brian Long and Andrew Jones, who sold their previous startup company TapCommerce to Twitter in 2014 for $100 million, makes and provides a mobile messaging platform to businesses to connect with new and existing customers through personalized and multimedia messages. It also gives its customers the ability to send customized messages based on certain types of events, like customers abandoning their online shopping cart or making their first purchase from a brand. The technology also helps marketers create and test new campaigns, target specific customer segments, and evaluate the performance of campaigns by measuring the revenue they generate.

Brian Long said that “In a few years, brands will be expected to engage in real-time, two-way conversations with their customers via mobile messaging. You will see every business using personalized messages to communicate everything from marketing, transactions, and customer service—across the entire lifecycle. Our mission is to create the best-in-class solution for engaging with today’s mobile-first consumers.”
Attentive’s customers are mostly e-commerce companies like Coach, Urban Outfitters, Party City and CB2. The company has now 750 companies using its platform and also serves clients in other industries like food and beverage, media and entertainment, and travel.
“Attentive’s growth is a clear indication that people want to interact with brands in new ways, and brands are embracing messaging as an effective way to reach consumers,” said Sequoia partner Pat Grady in a statement. “We are thrilled to double down on our partnership with Attentive so they can continue to deliver fantastic results for their customers and valuable experiences for consumers.”
