Trigo plans to use the money to expand the deployment of autonomous urban supermarkets across Europe and the United States, penetrate new regions, and create software applications for managing stores' inventories.
With the addition of new applications, the Israeli startup hopes to help retailers track inventory in real-time, reduce the amount of out-of-stock and expired merchandise for both in-person and online sales, reduce fraud, personalise marketing, and predictably manage store and supply chain operations.
They have demonstrated that they can use computer vision and AI to equip physical stores with the same insights and capabilities as e-commerce stores. With this funding, Trigo can now carry out its expansion plan and develop our product to meet our customers' changing needs.
A sizable group of computer vision, IoT, and AI specialists took a few years to advance to the point where their retail operating system supports all of the store's merchandise with 99 per cent accuracy. This offers a considerable competitive edge in an industry that is expanding quickly.
According to RBR, the number of establishments providing customers with a seamless checkout experience using checkout-free technology surged threefold during 2021 to reach over 250. According to Trigo, there are 500,000 convenience and small-format grocery stores with the potential to be outfitted with frictionless AI technology worldwide.
By the end of 2027, more than 12,000 stores will be equipped with checkout-free technology worldwide, according to RBR. However, it suggests that there will be more extensive rollouts throughout store networks if trials at big box and supermarket retailers are proven successful.
Some of the top grocery retailers in the world, including Tesco PLC in the UK, ALDI Nord in the Netherlands, REWE Group in Berlin and Cologne, Netto Marken-Discount (also known as Netto) in Utrecht, Shufersal (SAE: TLV) in Israel, and Wakefern Food Corp., the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the US, are currently using Trigo's solutions.
Investors' faith in Trigo's future is reflected in the magnitude and timeliness of its current fundraising round. According to CB Insights, global funding for retail technology plunged 43 per cent sequentially to USD 13.2 billion in Q2 2022, while quarterly deals dropped 21 per cent to 710. Only half (51 per cent) of the retail technology dollars spent in Q2 of 2022 came from mega-rounds (USD 100M+ deals), which is the lowest share in two years and a sharp fall from the two-thirds (69 per cent) of the first quarter. Mega-round activity decreased in the second quarter of 2022, from 61 deals in the first quarter to 32 in the second.
