| | July 2021 6EDITOR'S DESKThe year 2020 didn't offer us many positives to take out, but it's safe to say the extraordinary progress made in digital transformation is one silver lining. Though the rapidly maturing software technologies meant most sectors were already on a digital journey, the COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be an accelerator and an unexpected stress test for these new solutions. In addition, with employees and consumers confined to their homes for much of the year, the situation has demanded a more virtual way of doing things and has put pressure on to fast-forward the digital agenda. In the past year, most startups in Singapore have witnessed a decline in supply and or demand, except for those startups that are engaged in the delivery of `essential services' and few exceptions like educational technology, gaming or streaming services. However, the startup ecosystem has always been continuously striving to adapt to challenging situations as flexibly as possible by focusing on innovating and diversifying their business techniques and operations. The current COVID-19 crisis shows the importance of small businesses with more incremental approaches to innovation. That said, startups will be critical to economic recovery by creating most of the net new jobs as our society becomes increasingly digital. It is imperative that governments act swiftly to support these small businesses in their digital innovation and economic recovery endeavours. This is especially true for emerging ecosystems and those without decades of experience and capital pool in places like Silicon Valley. On that note, we present the insights of the most promising startups in Singapore to help organizations explore and unlock perspectives that translate to desired business and operational outcomes.
