There is a massive shortfall between the amount of food we produce and the amount needed to feed everyone in 2050. In order to satisfy global food demand in 2050, we need to increase global food production by 70 per cent. As incomes rise, more people prefer to consume resource-intensive, animal-based foods which are responsible for nearly 15 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, we urgently need stop conversion of remaining forests to agricultural land. To address the challenge of providing food to the ever-growing population, while protecting the environment, several technological innovations are being brought to the market. These technological innovations with advanced sensors are being used to monitor and grow high-quality crops. Major technology innovations in the space have focused around areas such as indoor vertical farming, automation and robotics, livestock technology, modern greenhouse practices, precision agriculture and artificial intelligence, and blockchain. Modern greenhouses are using LED lights and automated control systems to maintain the environment for crops perfectly. Greenhouse farming practices are scaling significantly and are now shifting to urban areas to capitalize the need for the ever-increasing demand for nutritious food, no matter the season.
