Bengaluru: The second quarter of 2015 witnessed a flurry of cyber attacks and other security vulnerabilities. Cyber criminals are continuously evolving their attack strategies and posing more risks by concentrating on the minor sectors that have been overlooked. According to a survey conducted by Trend Micro, India emerged as the top preferred nation by cyber criminals worldwide to induce data stealing malware and hijack businesses transactions & user information from SMBs.
“In the second quarter, we saw a shift in the threat landscape with cyber criminals becoming more sophisticated and creative, amplifying existing methods of attack, and using them in new ways,” says Myla V. Pilao, Director, TrendLabs Marketing Communications, Trend Micro. “The ethereal outlook on the threat of cybercrime can no longer be held by the general population. This quarter demonstrated that the potential damage caused by cyber attacks extends far beyond a simple software bug to hacks of airplanes, smart cars and television stations,” he added.
The survey also revealed startling figures on the intensity of these cyber attacks. Over a 100 million malwares and 396 million spam messages were detected & blocked across APAC nations in the second quarter this year and more than 50 million URLs were hosted in APAC region alone.
Unlike the cyber criminals of yester-generation, these criminals are very selective in launching an attack. They are well updated with the latest technology and use strategic approaches to select their victims. One of the most ill-famous malwares of all time – the Angler Exploit Kit saw a 67 percent increase in its usage and the CryptoWall Ransomware was said to be the cause for 79 percent of infections in the United States.
